Please Don’t Treat Me Like I Treated You
LYRICS
Please don’t treat me like I treated you
Let’s turn the page, start something new
I’m here to change, to make amends
To be your lover and your friend
Please don’t treat me like I treated you
I’m learning now what you always knew
I wanna hear every word you say
Guide me closer, show me the way
Please don’t treat me like I treated you
I’ve been blind, now I have a clue
Blunders were made, but don’t say adieu
Trust in me as I trust in you
Please don’t treat me like I treated you
Give me a chance to make it all new
I promise change, just wait and see
I’ll treat you like you treated me
Oh, please don’t treat me like I treated you
I’m trying to change and see it through
I promise to try to understand
Take my heart as you take my hand
Please don’t treat me like I treated you
I’ve been lied, now I have a clue
Blunders were made, but don’t say adieu
Trust in me as I trust in you
You resign, cause I’ve been blind
To a love that’s pure and kind
I’ll listen more to hear your plea
Please let me treat you as you treated me
Please don’t treat me like I treated you
I’ve been blind, now I have a clue
Blunders were made, but don’t say adieu
Trust in me as I trust in you
With an open heart and an open view
Please don’t treat me like I treated you
Your love’s my guide, your heart’s my key
Please let me treat you as you treated me
Please don’t treat me like I treated you
I’m learning about what you always knew
I wanna hear every word you say
Guide me closer, show me the way
Please don’t treat me like I treated you
I’ve been lied, now I have a clue
Blunders were made, but don’t say adieu
Trust in me as I trust in you
INSPIRATION
Pretend that someone that’s wronged you is singing this to you. The words could apply to any relationship. In my case, it was my father who passed away, so this song was my way of getting closure. My mum loved me no matter what, but my father’s attention was always performance based. The trigger was the following thoughts: You know I don’t listen when you talk to me. I’m trying to change and communicate with you. I admit I don’t listen enough, and I don’t appreciate your efforts or your opinions. but I promise to try harder, and I’ll treat you like you’ve treated me. As always, songs take on a life of their own and go where they want to go.
The theme revolves around introspection, regret, self-awareness, and a plea for understanding or forgiveness. “Please Don’t Treat Me Like I Treated You” is about making amends and changing our ways. It is about learning from past mistakes, and how we want to be guided closer and shown the way. We want to be treated like a loved one and promise to try to listen and understand. It is about trust and love that is both pure and kind and encourages us to keep an open heart and an open view, and to trust in our loved ones.
