INSPIRATION
The inspiration for this song was regrets for past decisions that hurt others and the wish to rectify the consequences. It started out as, ‘Can I go back in time, and change my decision,’ but after the first rough demo, we changed decision to mind as it was a near-rhyme for time, and therefore sounded better.
It explores the theme of longing to fix past mistakes and bad decisions followed by the acceptance of the present. The singer was Argentinian, so we added a chorus in Argentinian Spanish to showcase the beauty of her voice when singing in her mother tongue, as the purity doesn’t always come through in English. “Can I Go Back In Time” is about the desire to go back in time and change past decisions, to trade sorrow for joy, seek out love, and leave the past pain behind. It’s about untangling the knots of life, make right choices, and find peace of mind. The song is about healing the pain of the past, and how the future is a canvas fresh for life’s design. It encourages us to seek new joys and leave sorrows behind, because the past is gone, but the future is ours to define.
